A Note on the Sticky Matroid Conjecture

چکیده
A matroid is sticky if any two of its extensions by disjoint sets can be glued together along the common restriction (that is, they have an amalgam). The sticky matroid conjecture asserts that a matroid is sticky if and only if it is modular. Poljak and Turzı́k proved that no rank-3 matroid having two disjoint lines is sticky. We show that, for r ≥ 3, no rank-r matroid having two disjoint hyperplanes is sticky. These and earlier results show that the sticky matroid conjecture for finite matroids would follow from a positive resolution of the rank-4 case of a conjecture of Kantor.

On sticky matroids
The “sticky conjecture” states that a geometric lattice is modular if and only if .azy two of its extensions can be “glued together”. It is known to be true as far as rank 3 geometries are corrcerned. In this paper we show that it is sufficient to consider a very restricted class of rank 4 geometries in order to settle the question. As a corollary we get a characterization of uniform sticky mat...
متن کاملA note on Fouquet-Vanherpe’s question and Fulkerson conjecture
The excessive index of a bridgeless cubic graph $G$ is the least integer $k$, such that $G$ can be covered by $k$ perfect matchings. An equivalent form of Fulkerson conjecture (due to Berge) is that every bridgeless cubic graph has excessive index at most five. Clearly, Petersen graph is a cyclically 4-edge-connected snark with excessive index at least 5, so Fouquet and Vanherpe as...
متن کاملMatroid Secretaries
We prove that for every proper minor-closed class M of Fp-representable matroids, there exists a O(1)-competitive algorithm for the matroid secretary problem on M. This result relies on the extremely powerful matroid minor structure theory being developed by Geelen, Gerards and Whittle. We also note that for asymptotically almost all matroids, the matroid secretary algorithm that selects a rand...
متن کاملA note on mutation and Khovanov homology
It is conjectured that the Khovanov homology of a knot is invariant under mutation. In this paper we reformulate this conjecture using a matroid obtained from the Tait graph (checkerboard graph) G of a knot diagram K. The spanning trees of G provide a filtration and a spectral sequence that converges to the reduced Khovanov homology of K. We show that the E2–term of this spectral sequence is a ...
متن کاملOn a Conjecture Concerning Dyadic Oriented Matroids
A rational matrix is totally dyadic if all of its nonzero subdeterminants are in {±2 : k ∈ Z}. An oriented matriod is dyadic if it has a totally dyadic representation A. A dyadic oriented matriod is dyadic of order k if it has a totally dyadic representation A with full row rank and with the property that for each pair of adjacent bases A1 and A2 2 ≤ ∣∣∣∣det(A1) det(A2) ∣∣∣∣ ≤ 2. In this note w...
